Gothic literature:

Gothic literature appeared at the end
of the 18th century and lasted until the end of the 19th
in England. Most of the gothic novels are supposed to procure us
feelings of anxiety, insecurity and fear, whereas the atmosphere is
supposed to be heavy, dark, gloomy, irrational or mysterious. Also,
those books' stories are expected to happen in scary places such as
churches, graveyards or old castles. To finish, events like full
moonlight or funerals and actions like transgression remind many of
us of the Gothic style.

Nowadays, Gothic literature may seem to
be outdated, but it evolved indeed throughout the 20th
century to give fantasy or science-fiction books such as Harry Potter
or The Lord of the Rings. And it's not over yet !
